Word counter

Count words, characters, lines and bytes as you type. Check the text against length limits and SMS segments, and find the hidden characters and Greek/Latin lookalike letters that break searches, joins and imports.

Words are counted the way Word does: anything between spaces that holds a letter or a digit. Characters are what you see on screen, so an emoji counts once; line breaks are not counted. UTF-8 bytes is what VARCHAR2(n BYTE) and most files measure: Greek letters take 2 bytes, emoji 4. Excel’s LEN() counts UTF-16 units, so an emoji is 2 there. SMS: one character outside the GSM alphabet, such as a lowercase Greek letter, a curly quote or an emoji, switches the whole message to UCS-2 and cuts a segment from 160 to 70 characters. Some phones and gateways convert Greek capitals to Latin lookalikes; this counter does not assume they will. Browsers turn Windows line endings into Unix ones when you paste. Open the file instead to check its line endings.
